April 15, 2005 — U.S. neuroscientists suggest antioxidants may support brain health. The latest study performed at the University of South Florida College of Medicine found that rats fed diets rich in antioxidants had better health in their nerve cells and thus better support for brain health, as opposed to those rats that did not have antioxidants supplemented to their diet.
Scientists say diets supplemented with antioxidants may counteract the burst of free radicals involved in the cascade of brain cell loss. An excess of free radicals can negatively affect cellular lipids, proteins, and DNA. Previous research on older rats showed enriched diets may slow normal age-related declines and may help promote memory and learning. The full findings will be published in the May issue of the journal Experimental Neurology.
