Presentations Included the Innovative Technology Behind the Pharmanex BioPhotonic Scanner and the Benefits of Tegreen 97
PROVO, Utah - June 27, 2005 - Scientists from Pharmanex, a division of Nu Skin Enterprises (NYSE: NUS), presented two scientific studies at a joint meeting of the Third International Symposium on Natural Antioxidants-Molecular Mechanisms and Health Effects (ISNA) and the Meeting of the Society for Free Radical Research (SFRR Asia) held June 24 to 29 in Shanghai. The annual meeting attracted scientific researchers from around the world to discuss the most recent breakthroughs in antioxidant research.
"We were honored to be invited to this international symposium and welcomed the opportunity to present our latest scientific findings on the Pharmanex BioPhotonic Scanner and Tegreen 97 at this prestigious event," said Joseph Chang, Ph.D., president of Pharmanex. "Our participation at the conference is evidence of our ongoing commitment to scientific research in antioxidants and overall nutrition."
About the Studies Carsten Smidt, Ph.D., vice president of research and development for Pharmanex, presented "Clinical Validation of a Non-invasive Raman Spectroscopic Method to Assess Carotenoid Nutritional Status." This study indicated the Pharmanex® BioPhotonic Scanner is accurate and less variable than the current time consuming high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) method, which, unlike the Scanner, requires invasive blood sampling and extensive sample preparation.
Jia-shi Zhu, MD, Ph.D., senior director of clinical pharmacology for Pharmanex, presented "Anti-angiogenesis and Weight Loss Properties of Antioxidant Tea Catechins (Tegreen 97®) in a Diet-Induced Obese-Metabolic Syndrome X Model." The study suggested that Tegreen 97®, a standardized polyphenol-enriched green tea extract, may have blood sugar-control attributes, body fat-burning properties and weight-loss benefits in an experimental model of Metabolic Syndrome X - a precursor to type-2 diabetes.
In addition to company scientists, Dr. Lester Packer, a professor in the School of Pharmacy at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles and member of the Pharmanex Scientific Advisory Board, chaired a scientific session and gave the opening plenary lecture at the conference. The topic of his presentation was "Biological Antioxidants: Mechanisms of Action and Modulators of Gene Expression." Professor Packer, who is known as the father of antioxidants, also visited the Pharmanex research laboratories in Shanghai during his stay.
During the international meeting, Pharmanex organized a scientific seminar on nutrition status and differences in Asian and Western countries. A famous nutrition scientist from China, Professor Qipei Liu of Shanghai Medical School of Fudan University, delivered this topic to nutritionists, chemists, pharmacologists and clinicians from China and the United States.
