Patent Covers Both Product Composition and Preparation Methods
Pharmanex, makers of high-quality dietary supplements, has announced the awarding of the first U.S. patent for its premier ginkgo product, BioGinkgo® 27/7. U.S. Patent number 6,174,531, issued on January 16, 2001, covers both preparation methods as well as actual product composition. The research that led to the patent was a collaborative effort between the U.S. and Chinese scientific communities.
Among the preparation methods covered by the patent, one of particular importance involves an extraction process. Applied to Ginkgo biloba leaves, the process yields increased amounts of one set of key ingredients, commonly referred to as the terpene lactones, along with one particular chemical component known as ginkgolide B. As a result, increased levels of ginkgolide B in BioGinkgo® demonstrate improved biological activity, generating a more potent product. References to this enhanced activity have appeared in studies published in prestigious peer-reviewed journals including Planta Medica ("The Bioavailability of Ginkgolides in Ginkgo biloba Extract," Planta Medica, vol. 63, 1997). In addition, this newly patented process is more environmentally friendly, as it avoids the use of hazardous solvents.
Another process covered under the patent applies to the production of desired ratios of key ingredients, accomplished through their controlled blending following extraction. These ratios preserve the natural balance between the flavone glycosides and the terpene lactones (ginkgolides). The patent also protects the method by which the undesirable ginkgolic acids are removed.
"We are proud that the U.S. patent office has issued a patent on our proprietary method of manufacturing a high quality Ginkgo biloba extract that is safe and effective," stated Joe Chang, president of Pharmanex. "Pharmanex research and development continues to be recognized for its innovation and we are encouraged that our processes and product is in keeping with our commitment to producing quality and clinically-substantiated products. We look forward to having this same recognition and protection awarded to other Pharmanex products in the coming year."
